Mild Winter…. Early Spring….. Hot Summer!

Is your Central Air Conditioning and Heating System working at peak performance? You probably don’t know because we’ve had such a mild winter throughout Florida that your system has gotten very little use……but summer is just around the corner with Scorching Temperatures and High Humidity all contributing to high energy bills and the potential failure of your system.

Call Air Flow Designs today at 1-800-247-3561 in Tampa and Jacksonville or 321-397-2110 in Central Florida to arrange a free estimate for replacing that old system before it fails during the peak of the heat this summer. We are currently running special promotions that can save you over $1,000 on your investment through the end of February. That doesn’t even factor in our special Financing Offers or Utility Company rebates which can also go over $1,000 with Florida Power and Light. Progress Energy, TECO, Peoples Gas, Jacksonville Energy Authority and other smaller utilities all offer some form of rebate either to us as your dealer or to you as the homeowner. If it comes to the dealer, we immediately subtract the rebate from your purchase investment by that amount.

If your system is over 8 years old and you believe your utility bills were higher last summer than they should have been, give Air Flow Designs a call to get your free system replacement estimate. We also have one of the largest Service Departments in the state if a simple tune-up or a diagnosis of the problem issues are your needs. Air Flow Designs also offers a complete line of Indoor Air Quality Products to reduce the dust in your home, extend the life of your equipment and some that will even kill bacteria and viruses on surfaces and in the air. The COLD Weather Will Come…Are you Ready?

Published by acprofessor under Heat Pumps,Heating

Have you stopped to think about what a mild winter we’ve had so far?  A couple of days in the 30’s is about it for our version of winter thus far.  We still have another 6 weeks to go before the plants and shrubs start to show new bright green growth as spring truly does arrive and, if history is any indicator, those could be our coldest 6 weeks of the year.

Also, with the vast majority of Mid Florida and North Florida heated with heat pumps and the occasional straight cool unit with electric heat strips, it is significantly more expensive to heat your home to a comfortable temperature than it is to cool your home in the summer to a comfortable temperature.  After all, if you set your thermostat for even a pretty cool 68 degrees in the winter when it is 35 degrees outside, your system has to work hard to overcome that 33 degree differential.  However, if you have your thermostat set on a comfortable 78 in the summer and it is 94 degrees outside, you are only asking it to overcame a 16 degree differential or about ½ of the heating differential.  So you can see why it is more expensive to heat your home than to cool it.   The big difference is that we usually have a lot of 94 degree days and not too many 35 degree days but some years we have a bunch of those 35 degree days.  Two years ago, we had extended, lengthy “cold snaps” in both January and February which, in many cases, produced the highest electrical utility bills of the entire year.

That’s why this is the perfect time of the year to be considering either having your system tuned up by a professional technician from Air Flow Designs or to request a free estimate on replacing your air conditioning and heating system from one of our Comfort Consultants.  A properly tuned up system will more than pay for the tune-up and save you money throughout the year.  If your system is even only 8 years old, in most cases it is either a 10 or 12 SEER Efficiency System.  Today systems start at 13 SEER (30% more efficient than a 10 SEER system) and range up to the 18-19 SEER ranges.   These new systems all carry 10 years parts and compressor warranties and are all eligible for the Air Flow Designs Protection Plan which covers all labor costs and tune-ups as well for one low annual fee after the first year.

Call today to arrange for one of our Service Technicians to come out and perform a money saving tune-up or one of our Comfort Consultants to provide a free in home visit to discuss your savings options with you.  We also offer Blown-In Insulation to save you even more.  In Central Florida, call 321-397-2110 and in Northeast Florida , call 904-398-0831.  In the greater Tampa Bay area please call 813-962-7887.  Call today to find out how much you may be able to save…and let the Utility Companies help with that savings, too…..there are currently High Efficiency Heating and Cooling Utility Rebates in effect from: FP&L, TECO, People’s Gas, Progress Energy, OUC, JUA and others.  After paying them for years, let them pay you!

Savings Abound in the AC Arena

There are multiple savings stories in the world of Central Air Conditioning in Florida these days with Manufacturer Rebates, Utility Rebates, Energy Usage Savings, Federal Tax Credits and Special Financing Offers provided by the dealers and manufacturers.  All of these specials make buying a high efficiency Air Conditioner or Heat Pump less expensive than it was 7-10 years ago with greater efficiency equaling greater long term savings as well.

Currently, through the end of June, Carrier, in conjunction with Air Flow Designs, is offering up to $1,350.00 in Instant Cash Rebates on the Top of the Line Infinity systems along with an Infinity Air Cleaner and Extended 5 Star 10 Year Labor Warranty.  They are also offering rebates on less expensive, but still high efficiency systems, ranging from $1000.00 down to $50.00.

Utility Rebates vary widely based upon your provider but they are offered by Florida Power and Light, TECO, Progress Energy, Peoples’ Gas, Jacksonville Energy Authority and Orlando Utilities.  These rebates can range from $125.00 to over $1,000 based upon your providing utility, the size of your system and the efficiency of the system that you elect to purchase.  Also, today’s systems are much more efficient than even the systems of 6-10 years ago which were typically 10 SEER Systems.  Today’s minimum SEER rating by government mandate is 13.0 SEER and they can range up to 18 SEER for heat pumps, the most popular choice for heating and cooling in Central and North Florida.    The difference between a 10 SEER unit and a 13 SEER unit should provide you with approximately 30% savings on your cooling costs or about 15% on your total electrical bill during the peak summer season.  Moving up to 15 SEER would reduce the cooling costs by nearly 50% relative to a 10 SEER system.

Also, there are special financing options available currently co-sponsored by Carrier Corporation and Air Flow Designs.  You can, with approved credit through Wells Fargo, have a full 12 months with minimum payments monthly to pay off your new system with absolutely no interest incurred.  These savings can be substantial as well.

And finally, the federal government is still offering a $300.00 Tax Credit on your taxes for this year (filed in 2012) on qualifying equipment!  That’s a Tax Credit….not a Tax Deduction.  You must have a tax liability of at least $300.00 to qualify but it’s not often you can get a deal like this from Uncle Sam!

So let’s count up the Potential Savings:

$1,350 in Carrier / Air Flow Designs Cool Cash
$1,050 In Florida Power and Light Rebate (Less for smaller systems or other  Utilities)
$500+ in Energy Usage Savings
$700 in Interest savings in Financing in first year
$300 Federal Tax Credit

Total Savings…..$3,900 on a Top of the Line Carrier / Air Flow Designs Infinity system…..with more savings every month that your utility bill comes in!

Call Today to start saving money!  In Central Florida, call 321-397-2110.  In Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties, call 813-961-7887 and in N.E Florida, Call 904-398-0831 but wherever you live in these service areas, call Today!

Remember the Old Adage, “If it’s too Good to be True….It Probably Isn’t…Even in Air Conditioning!”

Published by acprofessor under Air Conditioning

That holds true even today…. especially in Marketing and Advertising, even in the time tested world of Air Conditioning Sales and Service.  There are a number of companies in Florida advertising new systems that are very aggressively priced….until you find out it doesn’t include many of the components required for a successful system to operate properly…Like Installation labor….and it’s not a do it yourself project unless you happen to work in the heating and air conditioning industry and have an EPA license.  Some of these companies are also misrepresenting the equipment they are quoting and are not providing all the services anticipated from them even after a careful reading of the advertisement.

An example of one such ad recently started with “Receive a $X,XXX 15 SEER 3-Ton Heat Pump for only $X,XXX where the promotional offering price was less than ½ of the original price.  The key word here is “Receive.”  It says nothing about having it properly installed so….it wouldn’t be a bad price …..if you could install it yourself but EPA guidelines and laws make that virtually impossible.

Some things to watch for if you are having a system quoted to you as a homeowner:

1. Does the final price you are quoted appear to have any relationship to the price you saw in the newspaper, on television or heard on the radio?  If not, why not?

2. Are they putting specific equipment model #’s on the contract so you know exactly what you are getting or just talking about SEER and Efficiency and avoiding telling you exactly what you are getting?

3. Are the installers company employees or sub contractors?  If they are subcontractors, they won’t be covered by Worker’s Compensation insurance, in all likelihood, so you could  be held responsible if one of them were to be injured on your property.

4. What kind of training have these “Sub-Contractors” received on today’s more sophisticated, higher efficiency, new refrigerant based equipment as opposed to company employees that have regular manufacturer sponsored training?

5. Do you have to pay extra for the use of credit terms?  Ethical companies typically factor this in and the price is the price.

6. Are they showing you a breakdown on how the final price was arrived at including showing you all the discounts and rebates to which you are entitled?  If not, how do you know you are getting the appropriate discounts and rebates?

7. Does the contractor have an acceptable record with the Better Business Bureau and a minimal # of complaints?  Most contractors, over the years, may get the occasional complaint that is normally resolved quickly with the BBB.  Be concerned if the contractor you are considering has a high # of complaints and a number are not resolved.

8. If they are quoting a variable speed indoor unit, are they providing a humidity control thermostat  to take advantage of the benefits of variable speed units and truly see the savings you are being promised?

9. If the company is providing additional services, like duct cleaning, is the company certified to do the work? In Duct Cleaning that National Certification usually comes form NADCA-National Air Duct Cleaners Association.

10. Are their Technicians NATE Certified?  Again NATE (North American Technical Excellence) is the leading certification program for Heating and Air Conditioning Technicians in the United States and these techs are the most trained and knowledgeable in the country.

11. When they advertise extremely low prices on service and preventative maintenance, does it really make sense that they could  answer the call, dispatch a trained technician in a company truck with all the overhead associated with that tech and truck for under $10.00?  Or is this simply a marketing ploy to get the tech in your home to find additional work and charges?

These are a number of questions that you should be asking yourself if you are considering investing in a new AC unit this year…and now is the time to ask them before it gets to the peak of the summer season when you may be willing to pay just about anything to get a system installed quickly, even overlooking some of the above issues that you know are important.

Call Air Flow Designs Today to arrange a free  no hassle low pressure estimate on replacing your current system.  With Carrier’s Spring 2011 Cool Cash Promotion, Utility Rebates, Federal Tax Credits and Energy Savings, along with Special Financing Offers, there has rarely been a better time to invest in your family’s comfort and health with indoor air quality options as well.

Again, call Air Flow Designs At 321-397-2110 in Central Florida to arrange for one of our representatives to arrange a personal, in home visit to assist you in your decision making process.  We believe in ethically helping homeowners make informed decisions and then doing an excellent job of installing the selected system.  In the Tampa Bay area, call 813-961-7887 and in Northeast Florida call 904-398-0831.

AC System Sales by Phone…..A REALLY BAD Idea!

There are a number Air Conditioning companies advertising in Central Florida today that offer great system savings because they’ve taken the salesman out of the loop and are willing to pass those savings on to you ……at first blush, it sounds like a good idea since it can save you time and money!……But it is a REALLY Bad Idea and let us explain why.

Our Professional Sales Associates have been trained to ask you questions about your current system, your lifestyle, what your expectations are for a new system, and analyze a number of additional factors before providing you a number of options that should meet your needs.  They also have had extensive training from the manufacturers we represent to know the systems and which ones will best suit your needs.

Some of the questions, that won’t be asked by a telephone representative are:
1. When your old system was working properly, did it heat and cool all areas of the home adequately?

2. Are there any rooms or areas that don’t seem as comfortable as others?

3. Are you home during the day or would a programmable thermostat be advantageous for you so you’re automatically adjusting the temperatures when no one is going to be home?

4. How about the humidity levels in your home-do you ever feel a little “clammy”?

5. Would you like to be able to control the humidity as well as the temperature?

6. Is humidity control something you’d like to hear more about?  Most people find they are comfortable at higher temperatures once the humidity is brought down consistently, saving you more money.

7. Are you familiar with the benefits of a Variable Speed Air Handler or Furnace?

8. Has anyone inspected your attic insulation to see if it is adequate by today’s standards?  Higher R-Value insulation can save you every month on your power bill.

9. Do you have an adequate return air duct system (especially important for bedrooms and evening comfort) for today’s more efficient systems?

10. May I take a look in your attic at your entire duct system to see if it is
a. In Good overall shape
b. Adequately sized for today’s systems
c. Properly sealed at the registers and mixing boxes

11. Does anyone in your home suffer from allergies or asthma?

12. Would you be interested in improved filtration to keep the dust down?

13. How often do you typically change your filter?  Would you like a longer lasting one so you don’t have to change it so often?

14. Would you like to hear about the benefits of a UV light in your Air Handler or Furnace to keep mold and mildew from forming in your drain-pan and on your coil?

15. Have you heard of the Top Tech Air Knight from RGF Industries?  It is designed to KILL viruses and bacteria that are either air borne or on surfaces keeping your whole family healthier.

16. Are credit terms or a flexible payment structure more in tune with your budget than a one time cash outlay?

17. Would you be interested in a higher SEER System that allows you to take advantage of greater discounts from the manufacturer and the Federal Tax Credit?  While not as attractive as the last two years’ tax credits, it still nice to let the government help you buy your system.

18. Has anyone discussed the differences between single speed or stage outdoor units with you vs. 2 speed units which will run on low speed approximately 75-80% of the time saving your money in the long run?

19. May I take a look at your electrical panel box and hookups at the system components to make sure they will be the right size and type for the new system?  In many cases the electrical breakers of older systems do not match up well with the new equipment.

20. May I take some quick measurements for the larger pad we may need for the outside unit since today’s units are typically larger than those of 8-10 years ago?

21. How much would you like to save on your utility bill on average each month?  The higher the efficiency the more you’ll save …but at greater initial investment cost.

22. Is ease of programming the thermostat important to you or do you see yourself as a real techie that enjoys getting into more challenging programming?

23. We will be pulling a mechanical permit on this job –will your phone company be doing the same ….and arranging to have it inspected and have any corrections noted resolved quickly?

24. Would you be interested in a Protection Plan that, allows you to renew annually for one low fee that provides not only an energy savings tune-up but also covers ALL Parts and Labor as long as the policy is in effect?

25. This is a major home improvement purchase that will impact your expenses and comfort over the next 10+ years….do you want to deal with a company that doesn’t even come out to do a site survey much less ask you very many of the above questions?

This list is in no way exhaustive.  The answers to these questions may well lead to other questions.  The answers to these questions will help our professional staff assist you in selecting the right system for your home.  Don’t save a few bucks and a little time and make a decision over the [hone that you will end up living with for years to come.

Call Air Flow Designs At 321-397-2110 in Central Florida to arrange for one of our professionals to arrange a personal in home visit to assist you in your decision making process.  We don’t believe in high pressure sales but do believe in helping homeowners make informed decisions and then doing an excellent job of installing the selected system.  In the Tampa Bay area, call 813-961-7887 and in Northeast Florida call 904-398-0831.

Air Flow Designs Announces Whole Home Energy Analysis – Save Energy and Money!!

Air Flow Designs is now offering whole home energy analyses to allow homeowners to save even more than with just buying high efficiency air conditioning and heating equipment.  With the cost of energy usage forecast to continue escalating over the next 10 years, Orlando homeowners need to take advantage of every energy saving tool in the book.

Air Flow Designs now employs a Certified Res-Net Rater for conducting Blower Door Tests and Duct Blaster Tests as well.  The Blower Door Test demonstrates where energy in the form of air and moisture infiltration is occurring in your home.    Recommendations can be made about sealing around windows, doors, even electrical outlets.  Some infiltration also occurs where the walls meet the floors and ceilings.   The Duct Blaster   Test also tells you how much of your conditioned air is escaping into the attic and never making it into the living quarters of the home.  Recommendations can be made as to sealing the ducts at the joints and at the registers along with the plenums, the large ducts located at your indoor unit.  The Florida Department of Energy states that 60% o f the homes in Florida could be leaking as much as 40% of their conditioned air into the attics!  Just think, this would mean that, in this worst case scenario, with a 5 ton system, only 3 tons of air is making it into the home while 2 tons are escaping into the attic.

Air Flow Designs is also offering inspections of the insulation in your attic as well as part of the whole home energy audit.  Most utility companies now recommend a minimum of R-30 in the attic while R-19 was the standard in the building industry from the late 1970’s until recently.  This R-19 has, in many cases, settled and is now more likely to register around R11.  Adding insulation can easily make your home more comfortable in the peak periods of both summer and winter and save you energy dollars as well.

With a properly sealed home and duct system that isn’t allowing excessive energy loss in combination with a properly insulated home, Air Flow Designs can save you money today and long term into the future.  With these issues addressed , your home may even qualify for a smaller system than is currently installed saving you even more money!

Call Air Flow Designs at 321-397-2110 to arrange your Whole Home Energy Audit.  While there is a cost associated with this audit, with the purchase of a new system and at least two of the recommendations from the audit, the expense of the audit is applied to the new system, netting a $0.00 cost to you and long term savings.  Call Air Flow Designs today!

Repair or Replace Your AC System….What to Do & How to Make an Informed Decision!

Published by acprofessor under Orlando AC Repair

If you current system experiences a breakdown this summer, and it’s starting to show its age, you’ll have a decision to make…..do you repair it or should you replace it? In many cases, repair is the right answer but in many cases replacement is the right answer as well.

Since 01/01/10, no R-22 or Freon Based equipment may be manufactured in the United States.  Also the production of Freon was federally mandated to be decreased by 35% in. 2006 and again decreased by another 35% this year.  As one would expect, with consumer demand staying high for all the current systems out there requiring Freon for repairs and the production of Freon being down by over 55% in the last 4 years, the price for Freon is skyrocketing.  The long-term costs of maintaining an older system is escalating rapidly and, when it is compounded with the lower efficiency of most of the Freon based systems, it may make logical sense of to make the conversion to a Puron based system.  Today’s systems are a minimum of 13 SEER while many of the existing systems are 8 and 10 SEER systems.  This could represent savings on the AC and Heating portion of your utility bill of anywhere from 30-40%.  Also, remember that 13 SEER is today’s minimum….there are systems that go into the high teems now-18-19 SEER and will save you even more in the long run..

So again, how do you make the decision to Repair or Replace? Some guidelines are below:

Age of the equipment—You should strongly consider replacing any system that is over 10 years old.  Repair expense will continue to be an issue and you are losing out on the improvement of efficiency of today’s systems.

Cost of the Repair—If the repair is going to be “substantial”, it may make sense to replace the entire system.   You may want to consider replacement if the cost of the repair is $700.00 or more.

Savings in Utility Usage—If you’ve seen your utility usage go up (especially the kilowatt hours usage) in either the simmer or winter months the last few years, it may be time to replace.  Your system obviously isn’t as efficient as it once was.

Special Promotions, Tax Credits Utility Rebates— Most of the major manufacturers of Heating and Air Conditioning equipment run Special Consumer Rebate Promotions in the Spring and Fall.  These can reduce the cost of the higher end equipment by as much as $1300 with Carrier’s Cool Choices.  There frequently are also Credit Promotions as well where there is no interest if the system is paid off in 6 or 12 months.  This can save the consumers literally hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars, too.  Finally, the federal government is offering consumers up to a $1,500 Tax Credit if they install a new system this year that meets certain Energy Efficiency Guidelines.  This is a Tax Credit, not a Tax Deduction but be sure to discuss it with your tax advisor for more details.  Lastly, many utility companies are offering rebates which are either handled as a credit to your utility bill or as a deduction from the initial cost of the system.   All of the above reduce the cost of purchasing a new system and also reduce the long term investment cost of you comfort with improved efficiency.

So, be careful to look at all the angles, gather all the information, and make an informed decision.  Repair or Replace—it’s your call.
