What Is SEER2?

post img

Since the early 1990s, the Department of Energy (DOE) has used SEER ratings to evaluate and regulate the efficiency of HVAC systems across the country. The acronym SEER stands for seasonal energy efficiency ratio, and the higher the SEER number, the higher the unit’s efficiency.

Although this has been the industry standard for the last 30 years, there’s a new standard known as SEER2 by which HVAC systems will be judged starting Jan. 1, 2023.

Why Is a Change Needed?

The change to a SEER2 rating system aims to address the flaws in the original SEER rating system’s testing, including its evaluation of static pressure. Basically, the way SEER ratings have accounted for static pressure in their calculation hasn’t been as realistic or accurate compared to how these systems function in actual conditions.

What Are the New SEER2 Ratings for Florida?

When selecting a new or replacement cooling system after Jan. 1, 2023, Florida homeowners and business owners should follow the requirements for the southwest region, which will be:

  • AC system standards: 14.3 SEER2 rating, which is the equivalent of a 15.0 SEER rating
  • Heat pump standards: 14.3 SEER2 rating, which is the equivalent of a 15.0 SEER rating
  • Single packaged unit standards: 13.4 SEER2 rating, which is the equivalent of a 14.0 SEER rating
