Furnace Maintenance
Although your furnace doesn’t run as much as your air conditioner, you should still maintain the system once a year to help it operate efficiently when you need it most.
A furnace tune-up involves:
- Cleaning the system’s main components
- Tightening electrical connections
- Lubricating moving parts
- Testing and calibrating the thermostat
- And more
The benefits of keeping up with furnace maintenance make the investment well worth it. You can expect:
- Lower heating bills
- Fewer inconvenient breakdowns
- A more comfortable home
- A longer life span from your equipment
- Continued warranty coverage (if your warranty includes terms requiring regular maintenance, as many do)
Plus, you enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing your furnace is operating efficiently and safely.
You can always schedule a one-time visit, but we recommend signing up for a Protection Plan to enjoy even more benefits. These include discounts on future repairs and replacements, priority service, and courtesy reminders when you’re due for a tune-up.
If it’s been over a year since your last furnace inspection, now’s the time to schedule furnace maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Furnaces
Standard pleated air filters should be changed every three months, but it’s a good idea to check their condition monthly. Inexpensive fiberglass filters may need to be changed once a month, while high-efficiency media can last six months or longer.
At Air Flow Designs, we recommend inspections and preventive maintenance once a year for furnaces, preferably in the fall before the heating season starts. We offer comprehensive furnace maintenance, and our Protection Plan maintenance agreements can make the process convenient and cost-effective.
If your furnace has a pilot light, the thermocouple may be faulty or too far away from the flame. When no signal is received from the thermocouple, the gas supply is shut off automatically to prevent fires. If your furnace uses an electronic igniter, the flame sensor may be dirty or may have failed. Or, the gas valve itself may be faulty.
A device called a fan limiter controls the fan based on the temperature of the heat exchanger. Normally, it lets the heat exchanger reach operating temperature before the fan is turned on for greater comfort and efficiency. Then, it keeps the fan running for a while after the furnace turns off to cool the heat exchanger. If the fan limiter is faulty, the fan may run all the time or not at all.
Furnaces typically last 12 to 15 years or up to 20 with exceptional care and maintenance. As your furnace approaches the end of its service life, you may notice things like reduced performance, high utility costs, frequent breakdowns, or hints that something major is wrong, like a cracked heat exchanger.
If your furnace is over 12 years old and starting to have any of these problems, it may be time to consider a furnace replacement. Air Flow Designs can evaluate your system and provide expert advice on your repair and replacement options.
